Bluewater Trails began in the early 1990's, when a former CNR right-of-way
was designated a linear park. This allowed it to be used as a trail.
The trail was named in honour of Howard Watson, who was a former
Sarnia Township Councillor who originally supported the trail in
Sarnia.
The Lambton Wildlife Organization played a pivotal role in getting the Bluewater trail system started. Please follow this link to their site for more on the story.
In 1999, a consultant hired to design the Bluewater Trails Master Plan
felt confident that Bluewater Trails represented a major opportunity for
the City of Sarnia and surrounding communities.
Today the Bluewater Trails Committee is made up of volunteer citizens
and user organizations working in co-operation with City Staff to
develop an on-road and off-road trail system for the City of Sarnia
and the Village of Point Edward with links to trail systems in adjoining
municipalities.
